How We Calculate Your Payout: Spot Price, Weight & Purity Explained

We know what you might be thinking—how do I know I’m getting a fair price? Alloy uses a transparent process based on real-time gold prices, certified testing, and your item’s true gold content—no guesswork.

1. Spot price: The market value of gold today

The spot price is the live market value of one troy ounce of pure gold. It updates constantly—just like stock prices—and serves as the foundation for calculating how much your precious metals are worth.

Key facts:

  • Updated every 60 seconds

  • Based on global market trends

  • Used industry-wide as the baseline for valuation

2. Weight: How much gold your item contains

After we receive your package, each item is carefully weighed using a state-inspected scale at our certified lab.

What we measure:

  • Weight in grams or troy ounces

  • Only the precious metal content (stones, chains, or extras excluded)

  • Each item is reviewed individually before grouping into a final lot

🎯 Even broken or mismatched items are valuable based on weight alone.

3. Purity: How much of your item is real gold

Gold jewelry and bullion aren’t 100% pure unless they’re marked 24K. That’s why we test each item to determine its exact gold content.

Purity levels we commonly see:

  • 24K = 99.9% gold

  • 18K = 75% gold

  • 14K = 58.3% gold

  • 10K = 41.7% gold

We use both X-ray fluorescence (XRF) and acid testing to ensure accuracy.

📊 Purity directly affects your payout—the higher the karat, the higher the value per gram.

4. What happens after testing?

Once your items are tested for weight and purity, Alloy calculates your offer based on:

  • Internal pricing model

  • Current spot market value

  • Any active bonus promotions or offers

You’ll receive your Final Offer by text and email. If you accept it before 5 pm ET, you’ll be paid the same day via your chosen payout method.
